A follow-up to the 2010 mini comic, House Spirit Press has released the full Octobriana graphic novel from Steve Orlando (Outlaw Territory), Chaz Truog (Animal Man) and Thomas Mauer (Popgun).
Russia. 1968. The government has legislated love. To fight sexual oppression, tantric pagans infuse a dead god’s corpse with liberated sexuality… and Octobriana is born. Alone amongst her people, Octobriana is the goddess of passion, protecting love’s freedom.
Liuba Kulagina has been held in a science city for decades. Her only love was a telapathic affair with her guard. When he is put to death, Liuba takes her revenge with a thought-plague that kills only lovers. Octobriana must protect her people’s love, or die trying.
This edition of Octobriana is a full 88 pages, proudly presented on classic newsprint in the tradition of “samizdat” – the underground Soviet movement to published censored art and literature. You can buy the newest edition by itself for $3.00, or both comics for $5.75.
We’ll have these with us at Comic Con International later this month, July 20th-25th, at the Poseur Ink booth (Small Press 0-16).
San Diego was definitely a weird one this year. With attendance numbers at seemingly normal levels, the floor still felt empty. (I even walked around the floor with ease several times!) I don’t know if this had anything to do with the awesome Scott Pilgrim Experience across the street from the con this year, or what; but it weirded me out. (As a die hard fan, I can say the Scott Pilgrim Experience was awesome, though! Custom shirts, flipbooks, garlic bread… what more can a girl ask for?)
But yeah, strange attendance aside, we had a good time this year! We tabled with Ed Brisson of New Reliable Press, and it was great to hang out with him and some of his family at greater lengths. We were also between Tammy Stellanova and Wild Things Creations. (A table down from Real Gone Girl Studios and across from Mollycules.) So we had a fantastic group of artists and friends in our direct vicinity. We also had Katie and Shaggy Shanahan and Robert Iza staying at our apartment, so we were surrounded by sweet artists wherever we went. (Plus, we had the company of Steve Orlando throughout the show. Which is always a delight!)
Many burritos and nice sit-down meals were devoured, many You Tube videos were watched, and many great new friends were made. Not much else to say about that.
One awesome thing that came through the show: we now carry New Reliable Press books in the store! So, if you’re a fan of awesome indie artists and need a new fix: go check out Ed’s published works!
Hey guys!
After a long wait, Shark shirts are finally back in stock! We’ve also added a new mini-comic, Octobriana to the store. (The first of four issues – it’s absolutely great!) Next week, we’ll be selling at San Diego Comic Con International! We’ll be at booth M-05 in Small Press (under “Poseur Ink”). We’ll be the big turquoise booth covered in shirts and comics. We’ll be sharing some table space with Ed Brisson of New Reliable Press, so you can pick up some of his work at well!
Can wait to see you there!

For those of you who may not have heard from us in a while, or are just checking us out for the first time, we have a few new products in stock:
With the relaunch of the store in February, we teamed up with the awesome folks over at Rosalarian Comics to bring even more awesome comics and shirts your way. Rosalarian publishes humor, drama, and slice-of-life comics alike; but every one is a gem. So feel free to drop in the store and check them out. We’re stoked to have these folks aboard!
Mike and I are going to be exhibiting tomorrow at a local show, SDSU’s first annual Entrepreneur Day. We’ll be on campus selling merch from 10am-3pm. So if you’re in the greater San Diego area, please swing by to buy some new stuff!
There’s also some new updates over in the Octobriana blog, so don’t hesitate to go check those out and pledge today! Only 40 DAYS to raise $4,889!
Next month, we’re going to be exhibiting at TCAF (The Toronto Comics Art Festival) on May 8th and 9th, 2010. We’re very excited about the show and hanging out with our Canadian friends/fans. We’ll be somewhere in the main atrium with a deep aqua tablecloth covered in books and shirts (looking very confused as we try and figure out the USD to CAD price conversion). So feel free to come by and say hello!
